Lou Tseng-Tsiang

Lou Tseng-Tsiang
(1871–1949)
   Politician and Theologian.
   Lou was born in Shanghai, China, and was educated in Shanghai and Peking. He was born into a Protestant family and he was baptised Jean-Jacques. He had a distinguished career as a diplomat, as Foreign Minister and from 1922 to 1927 he was Chinese Minister in Berne. He had converted to Roman Catholicism in 1911 and in 1926 he joined a Benedictine community near Bruges, in Belgium. As Dom Pierre Celestin Lou, he was made Abbot of St- Pierre-de-Grand. He is remembered as both a Christian statesman in China and one who saw Christianity as the fulfilment of traditional Chinese religions. His Souvenirs et Pensées was translated as Ways of Confucius and of Christ.
